Giving gives us double blessings. One of the most pure joys in life are not the blessings we receive but the blessings we give! Jesus said,”it is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) If we truly believe His Word, then our life will be primarily about giving–right? When we believe His Word, we want His blessings so much that we are looking for ways to give instead of having to be asked to give. How would other people describe our giving? Are we giving before we’re asked?

Do we really believe these words of Jesus? He said, “give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38) Think about what our plan is for today. Are our primary goals centered on making better grades, more money, or better relationships; or increasing our fitness, health and success? Where does giving fit in? Most of us get stuck in the rut of thinking that giving is just about money. However, that’s just one of the many ways giving blesses us. We can also give away a smile, a hug, an encouraging word, a helpful hand, a listening ear, a meal, an encouraging note, a prayer, etc. Additionally, each of us is capable of having God’s wisdom and the knowledge of His Word to share with those in need.

We must train ourselves to listen to God so we may be constantly aware of when to give. When we listen to God, we focus on others. The more we focus on the needs of others, the less we need. And–while we’re busy helping others, God is busy giving us more than we need! Throughout the day, we should frequently be asking God: “Who can I bless by giving?” God always has a better plan than we do. He plans for us to experience the double blessing of giving–that is–the joy of giving to others while He gives us the deepest desires of our heart!
