How can we tell if our Christianity is pure before God and not just a big show for man? God’s Word says: “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” (James‬ ‭1:27‬)‬‬ Our Christianity is measured by a couple things: giving to the helpless and keeping our heart pure. It’s interesting that it’s NOT measured by money, smooth speech talent, possessions, position, pontification skills or rote knowledge of the Bible!

So, how much of our time and resources are dedicated to caring for the most helpless, downtrodden and needy–those who can’t give us anything in return. Are we so caught up in our own security and comfort that the helpless among us only get our leftover time? Or, while we are working, going to school, caring for our family and taking care of our daily responsibilities, are we also looking for opportunities to help the needy among us? We don’t have to go on a mission trip to practice true Christianity. The needy are all around us!

Furthermore, since the second part of that verse speaks of being “unspotted from the world,” how much time do we dedicate to purifying our heart verses primping and polishing our body? Is the goal of our physical betterment to enable us to accomplish something spiritual? Our talent, time and resources are wasted unless our underlying purpose is to promote something bigger than ourselves. When we begin to spend more time with God, He unspots us. As we begin to be free of the dirt, we find it’s glorious! We want to stay that way. We become addicted to our relationship with God. He gives us all we need and more than we imagined. We find that we love being His child and it’s a huge blessing to serve the helpless! We always have more to give than we need to receive because God is the one constantly filling our cup. This is the experience of true Christianity!
