Because love is their very essence, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three beings who exist as one. The Bible says: “God is love.” (1 John 4:8b) Simple and profound. But for love to exist, there must be more than one person involved. Love didn’t begin when man was created. It began with God. The Trinity experienced love with each other before we existed. They have always lived in a harmony so perfect that–they live as one. They surround each other, adore each other, work together, serve each other, and always seek to give each other joy and glory. God did not need man to experience love–He experienced it ages before we were created.

When we were created, they invited us to join them in this perfect dance of love. We were given a choice–because that’s what love is. When we chose sin instead of love, Jesus chose to surrounded us with love at the cost of His own life. Indeed, His very relationship with His Father was marred as He took our sin upon himself! He cried out from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46) The perfect love they had always experienced was interrupted by our sin. Sin separates us from God’s holiness–no exceptions. (Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 6:23) Jesus’ death and resurrection gave sinners an invitation to their dance of love. They invite us as one. The Son paid, the Spirit woos and the Father welcomes.

When we accept the gift of salvation, we are given the ability to experience their oneness. We can live with them as they have always lived together. The Bible says it beautifully: “In him we live and move and have our being.” ‭(Acts‬ ‭17:28‬a) We may live in the essence of God. We may live in love. When our heart is surrendered to Him in all we do, He becomes the most important part of who we are and we learn how magnificent it is to “live and move” in the essence of God!
