God’s presence is powerful and creates joy–just like the sunlight. Charles Spurgeon said: “A man who walks in the sunlight of God’s countenance…is warm and strong. The sunlight of joy usually goes with the warmth of spiritual life. As the light of joy varies so does the warmth of holy strength; he who dwells in the light of God is both happy and strong. He who goes into the shade and loses the joy of the Lord becomes weak at the same time. So the joy of the Lord becomes our strength, as being an indicator of its rise or fall.” (C.Spurgeon Sermon 1027, Dec. 31, 1871)

God does not change. (Malachi 3:6a) Thus, in Him our joy never diminishes. However, when we seek joy and strength from people, it’s like traveling to a dark planet where there exists only indirect or scattered sunlight woefully insufficient for sustaining life. We cannot expect to find life-strengthening joy from people who struggle with the same challenges we do. Furthermore, we’ll never find strengthening joy in anything inanimate. We weren’t designed that way. We were made in the image of loving God. When we seek Him as our greatest joy–we become strong. Why don’t we?

We don’t seek God as our greatest joy until we understand He is good. We seek what is good. We are often deluded to think that the the best goodness is found in human relationships, money, power, health, success and education. True–they are God’s gifts–but not the best gift. When we seek God, we find the SOURCE of goodness. Then, He perfectly tailors each gift to meet our needs. We are satisfied in Him. We have joy. We are strong. We rejoice as the Psalmist: “Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” (Psalms‬ ‭4:6-8‬) The soul who walks in God’s nourishing light is not pale and sickly from surviving on the insufficiency of the world; rather, it is full of life, joy and strength!
