When I ran track in college, my coach trained me to perform beyond what I ever knew I could do. The training was crazy! For example, he made us run the bleachers in the football stadium. We didn’t just run the bottom set, we ran all the way to the top–which was known as “Hog Heaven.” By the second of the required four sets, my lungs were on fire, heart was bursting out of my chest, and my hamstrings were like loose rubber bands involuntarily popping my knees up past my hips. I always felt like there was no way I’d finish two more sets! But–coach knew I could. He was a world class runner and had trained world class runners. I could trust him to bring out the best in me. Although I never became a world class runner, I accomplished a speed and strength far beyond what I’d ever possessed before he was my coach. He pushed me to accomplish what I didn’t know I could do. This is what God will also do for us.

God knows our limitations AND our potential. God knows we need His strength–the key is for US to know how much we need HIM. When the trouble of life sucks the wind out of our lungs so we don’t think we can run another step–we must remind ourselves that God is our STRENGTH. The Bible says: “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.” (Habakkuk‬ ‭3:17-19‬) http://bible.com/1/hab.3.17-19.kjv

Our Almighty Coach knows our limits because–He created us. He will produce strength in us that we’ve never seen in ourselves. We can trust that the races we run with Him are not beyond HIS strength and wisdom. When we see the results of God’s strength and wisdom working through us, then failures and life’s obstacles serve only to strengthen our resolve to train harder with Him! He ALWAYS wins!
