What is the basis for creating our life’s greatest goals and thus, forming the legacy we leave behind? In Steven Cubby’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” he suggests writing a personal mission statement based upon the eulogy others would write about us at our funeral. What do we hope that people closest to us–family members, best friends, closest professional associates and community members–will say about us at our funeral? Interesting. Will my children say: “She was a loving mom?” Will colleagues say: “She was a real killer in the courtroom? Will close friends say: “She was loyal?” While all these things are admirable, is this the sum purpose for the life God has given me? It’s not that there’s anything wrong with these goals per se; the problem is that they are about me–and I was created to glorify God!

The highest and most perfect goal we can have for our life is that it be lived for the purpose which GOD created us—to bring glory to Him. The Bible says: “I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” (Isaiah‬ ‭43:6-7‬) http://bible.com/1/isa.43.6-7.kjv We were created in His image and for His glory! When our life reflects the glory of God, our legacy is defined by HIM. His glory permeates every aspect of our life. Our legacy becomes everlasting because it is inextricably intertwined with everlasting God.

When we realize that God is the Creator of all the objects of beauty, intelligence and magnificence that we admire, then we step into reality and fashion our life’s goals upon the basis of glorifying Him. We begin writing a new legacy which has Him at the center. Then–when we are gone–GOD–is what others remember about us!
