God can grow amazing fruit with the seeds He plants in the garden of our heart, but–we must keep it free thorns. In the Parable of the sower, Jesus said: “Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” (Matthew‬ ‭13:7-8) And what did Jesus say this meant? He said: “As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” (Matthew‬ ‭13:22-23)‬‬ http://bible.com/59/mat.13.22-23.esv

When we are born again, God plants His seeds in the garden of our heart. These seeds are supposed to grow into fruit bearing plants which provide spiritual nourishment, strength, and God’s love to those who enter. However, we often allow our garden to be overrun with the thorns of selfishness and pursuit of the world so that those who enter our garden leave it scratched, torn, hurt and hungry. The thorns in our garden choke out the fruit so there isn’t even enough fruit to feed us–and, certainly not enough for anyone else! If we allow Him, God makes our garden flourish.

When our heart is humbled by His love, it transforms our heart. We will want to rip out the thorns that are choking the fruit. The more ground we clear, the more fruit we grow. The more thorns we remove, the more sunlight reaches the seeds. When we yield to Him, He transforms our heart into His garden of life so that all who enter are nourished and loved. There’s nothing as sweet as the fruit of the Spirit which grows in God’s garden!
