“If you love anything at all in this world more than God, you will crush it under the weight of your expectations, and it will eventually break your heart.” (Prayer: Experiencing Awe And Intimacy With God by Tim Keller) What do we love more than we love God? What captivates our expectations? What do we believe is our key source of joy? If it is less than God–it will break our heart.

About three months before I read this quote, God led me to make a very specific apology to my ex-husband. I told him that the failure of our marriage was, in large part, my fault, because–I expected him to love me like only God could love me. My unrealistic expectations crushed our marriage. I broke my own heart, but I blamed him. My love was out of order. I loved my husband more than I loved God. I placed a heavy burden on his love–and, of course, he failed–just like I did. We’re not capable of loving like God unless we love Him more than anyone else. Neither of us loved like that during our marriage. This realization was an awakening!

Anything we pursue with more passion than we pursue God will never meet our expectations and thus, it will break our heart. That’s because we were created to be completely satisfied in God. Nothing else ever comes close! The Bible is clear that our complete satisfaction is found only in God. For example: “And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” (Isaiah‬ ‭58:11)‬‬ http://bible.com/59/isa.58.11.esv If we place our expectation for satisfaction in–money, relationships, success, family, or anything less than God—then–our heart will be broken. But when knowing God is our greatest passion, we possess our greatest joy and love. He is The Creator of all the things less than Himself from which also derive joy. By loving God, we discover the fountain of our joy. He exceeds our expectations. His love never fails!
