The best friendships are those with whom we share our very soul. Such was the friendship between Jonathan and David. The Bible says: “Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:3) When God makes our soul and spirit alive through the new birth, He lives in us and we become capable of giving HIS love. We are capable of being a “soul-friend.” Our soul-friends share and enjoy God with us. Our respective relationships with God enable us to love deeper than we can without Him. So, who have we closed as our best friends?

If our criteria for choosing friends is based upon their status, wealth or other external attractions—rather than their heart—then we are settling for less meaningful friendships. We’re likely looking for “connections” to boost our societal and economic status rather than friends with whom we may share the deepest love, wisdom and strength of God. Our closest friends should have the rich characteristics of God in their heart. We often believe we need friends with “connections” to be successful. God is our greatest connection. We don’t need friends who are famous, powerful or wealthy to accomplish the amazing destiny God has for our lives. He wants us to be allied with people who think and love like He does. Perhaps Jonathan loved David because he recognized the same quality that God told Samuel to look for when he chose David as king of Israel. God said: “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) David’s was a man after God’s own heart! (Acts 13:22)

True friends are an amazing blessing! The Bible says a friend always loves us, will makes us wiser, and sticks closer than a brother! (Prov. 17:17; 13:20; 18:24) If we want friends who love with God’s love, we must look beyond the outward appearance, wealth and accomplishments. Our soul-friends have God’s heart!
