I remember how horrified I was the first time I read about King Manasseh, who was so evil that he burned his sons as a sacrifice to false gods. (2 Chronicles 33:5) I thought, how could anyone be so depraved? Later in my Christian life, I realized I was guilty of nearly the very same sin! You see, for much of my “Christian” life, God was not THE Lord of my life. I worshipped the idols of money, success, acceptance, materialism, “love,” and other worldly pursuits. I lived by the rules of hurry, worry, complain, plan and fight! Most of my time and resources were sacrificed on the altars of these lesser gods. So were my precious children. While I played at church and Christianity, my children, whom God entrusted me to teach His way, were thrust onto this fiery altar of hypocrisy. I sacrificed their knowledge of the true and living God upon the altar of my own desires and the pursuit of my own way. Sadly, I can’t change the past. But through repentance, God in His mercy forgave me and–I’m changing the future. It began with repentance, that is–learning to hate my sin.

As King David, I acknowledged my desperate need for God’s forgiveness. This prayer began to be burned into my heart and I took it for my own: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.” (Psalms‬ ‭51:1-4‬) http://bible.com/59/psa.51.1-4.esv God’s loving mercy has unimaginable changed the course of my life in ways so wonderful that I can scarcely articulate them. My children now see Jesus in me because He is the best part of who I am. They are the beneficiaries of the goodness God has worked in my life. I’m so grateful! King Manasseh also repented and–God forgave him. (2 Chronicles 33:13) In God’s hands, there is hope for the most vile among us. God’s mercy endures forever!
