For most of my Christian life I had a sadly warped view of God and it’s taken years of experiencing His presence to change it. Now, I have discovered He is extraordinary beyond definition! Why was I was afraid of Him? Why did I run? I was fearful His plans for me were less exciting than my plans for myself. I adjudged Him incompetent to guide me and incapable of knowing what would give me joy. I didn’t understand that He loves me–not because I’m extraordinary–but because He is! Yet miraculously, He chooses to love me despite the fact I’m less than He is. His love is the love I’ve spent my entire life desperately searching for!

Soren Kierkegaard wrote: “Is it an excellence in your love that it can love only the extraordinary, the rare? If it were love’s merit to love the extraordinary, then God would be—if I dare say so—perplexed, for to Him the extraordinary does not exist at all. The merit of being able to love only the extraordinary is therefore more like an accusation, not against the extraordinary nor against love, but against the love which can love only the extraordinary. Perfection in the object is not perfection in the love.” (Kierkegaard, Soren Works of Love) God loves us because HE is extraordinary and knowing Him allows us to experience HIS extraordinary love. The Bible says: “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John‬ ‭4:16‬) http://bible.com/59/1jn.4.16.esv Until we seek God with no reservations, we will never experience God as He truly is. He is love. What holds us back?

It’s not only our darkened view of God, but also our love of sin which prohibits us from experiencing God’s extraordinary presence. We must love Him more than we love our sin. He doesn’t force His love upon us. It is the call of grace–rather than the threat of hell–which draws us to Him. When we “know and believe the love that God has for us,” then we humbly acknowledge that we are the imperfect objects of His unwavering love and then His love grows within us. (1 John 4:17) It is the experience of God’s love that completely transforms our heart AND our view of Him! He is love.
