When we are depressed, angry, hurt, anxious, disappointed, etc., we must consider that WE are likely the biggest reason that we’ve lost our joy. GOD’S joy is unshakeable. HIS joy is “inexpressible and filled with glory.” (1 Peter‬ ‭1:8) HIS joy is “our strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10) Jesus said that in Him “our joy will be full.” (John 16:24) God does not lie; thus, when our joy is swept away by negative emotions, it’s because WE need to change something. We need to reorder our heart to ensure our greatest joy is in JESUS!

If anything is a more vital source of joy to us than God is–then we are setting ourselves up to lose our joy. God is the only one who doesn’t disappoint us. Could that be one of the many reasons that God commanded us to have “no other gods beside Him” (Exodus 20:2) and “love Him with ALL our heart, soul and mind?” (Matthew 22:37) To do differently is sin. Sin separates us from God; thus it separates us from our only source of unwavering joy. As Christians, we often give ourselves a pass for sins like worry, anxiety, hurt feelings, depression, etc.; however, ALL sin steals joy! For example, worry is doubting the character of God and hurt feelings which we coddle is a failure to forgive. If we justify this behavior because we claim to be a victim, we’re simply victimizing ourselves. Christ conquered hell and made us victors–NOT victims.

When God becomes the center of our life, we are no longer victims. When we confess and forsake our worry, anxiety, unthankfulness, depression, unforgiveness and disappointment–He frees us from those dark clouds and teaches us to walk in His glorious light. If these sins are habits, then we must be vigilant to constantly guard our minds and hearts against them and passionately seek to fill our life with God. HE already secured our joy and when He is our center–we wear our joy from the inside–out!
