We often burden ourselves with the cares which God has encouraged us to cast upon Him. We allow ourselves to fret, worry and stress under the load of our trouble. The Bible says that we should be: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:7‬) http://bible.com/1/1pe.5.7.kjv As God has been teaching me to pray by using the words of scripture, this is one of the prayers I’m learning is critically important for me if I want to maintain a peaceful heart. Thus, throughout the day, I have been disciplining myself to give God my trouble and problems.

This has always been challenging for me because of my pride and independence. I’d rather solve the problem myself–or worry–instead of being humble enough to ask God. Ironically, the verse right before we’re commanded to cast our cares on God, directs us to humble ourselves before Him! (1 Peter 5:6) Our pride drives us to worry because we don’t trust God completely to solve our problems–and WE CAN’T ALWAYS SOLVE THEM! So when we run up against that wall, rather than cast our cares upon God, we allow them to invade our soul. They infiltrate our heart and cause sleeplessness, weight fluctuations, addictions, anger, depression, etc. We make life so hard–when we don’t have to!

Prayer is a discipline which arises from our knowledge that we need God. Just like our body needs food, we were all born with a hunger for God. We often try to satisfy that need with poor substitutes–like worry. However, when we feed our need for God with reading His Word, meditation and prayer–we realize how well He takes care of us! We passionately desire prayer–in the same way our stomach roars when it is hungry. Casting care upon God becomes a habit borne of basic necessity. God’s Word says: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬) God’s peace is our choice–it’s priceless.
