Although it is necessary to engage our MIND to read God’s Word, it’s the hunger in our HEART that it satisfies! If reading His Word is simply an intellectual chore, habit or obligation–we are missing an amazing and transforming culinary delight! A simple example: I can’t fully verify your claim that your mom’s lasagna is wonderful unless I taste it–right? Looking at it, smelling it, thinking about it and watching other people eat it–is NOT tasting it. I must taste it! Interestingly, God’s Word is also described in terms of food like–bread (Matthew 4:4), water (Isaiah 55:10), milk and meat (1 Corinthians 5:12). When our HEART tastes it, the desire for His Word becomes our most powerful appetite. If we only eat once a week, we’re spiritually starving! Hearing the Word from the pulpit on the first day of the week should be like eating dessert at the end of a six course meal—or, like an appetizer before next six courses! His Word nourishes, strengthens and sustains us. Furthermore, His Word provides our best “comfort food” because it cradles our soul in everlasting proportions.
God has the perfectly balanced nutritional plan for our spiritual growth. Once His Word is in our heart, it’s never wasted. It becomes part of our spiritual cellular structure. The benefits are multiplied. His Word says, “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11) http://bible.com/59/isa.55.10-11.esv
The more we read and study God’s Word with a wide-open heart, the more we desire to feed upon the culinary delights He has carefully prepared especially for us. He loves us so much! He doesn’t want us to run off and start the day without breakfast OR go to bed on an empty tummy! Like mom’s cooking–God’s Word is too good to miss–so don’t skip even one meal!
