The benefits of friendship with God are countless! Daily, He shares His wisdom, love and power in ways we never imagined existed. Friendship with Him doesn’t happen overnight because, like all true friendships, it requires time to develop the relationship. Jesus termed it “abiding in Him.” He said: “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John‬ ‭15:7-11‬) http://bible.com/59/jhn.15.7-11.esv Wow–God wants to give us the full joy of His friendship!

God’s friendship isn’t bought with our tithes, offerings or grudging obedience. God isn’t someone who will be manipulated by our good works. He doesn’t have fake friends. Friendship with Him grows from an obedient heart. We must seek to be close to Him. We do this by stripping away the sins which separate us from Him and knowing Him by studying His Word. When we do these two things, our friendship with Him grows. Jesus explained the connection between our relationship with Him and the benefits which flow from it: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John‬ ‭15:5‬) The fantastic benefits of God’s friendship are accessible to us only when we’re connected to Him! We must attach ourselves to Him in loving obedience to His Word and prune off all the unholy, rotten branches of our vine. Then, we flourish and become immeasurably fruitful as His love, wisdom and power flow through us! When God is our best friend we never want to be without Him!
