The more I realize that love is not about me, the less I am hurt when I love those around me. Those we love the most hurt us the deepest. Perhaps it’s an unkind word, a forgotten anniversary, a violation of trust, a lack of appreciation, or simply a failure to communicate. But what is the measure of our love if it is often offended? Think about how God’s Word defines love: “It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:5‬) Loving God’s way removes us completely from the equation!

If our love of others is about fulfilling some need in ourselves, then we are not experiencing the love that God intends for us to possess. If we do something extraordinary for someone and they don’t appreciate it and we become offended—then our motive was never love–it was self-fulfillment. When we truly love, we take ourselves out of the equation! Wait–you say–if WE are taken out of the equation–how will WE ever feel loved? Ah–that’s the beauty of God’s love! His love is is sweeter, deeper, purer and more enduring than any love we’ve ever experienced. His love fills us so completely that it enables us to love others without expectation–thus we are without disappointment! If we are feeling hurt or disappointed in loving someone, we needn’t find fault with them or try to “fix” them; rather, we should examine our relationship with God!
The Bible says “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John‬ ‭4:8‬) It’s simple. Pure love comes from God. If we want it, we must have Him. The best way to learn to love others without fear of hurt, is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. He is love. His love never fails.
