We each choose the degree to which our trouble rob us of peace. We have bills, heartbreak, conflict, death, and every imaginable kind of unpleasantness. We all walk in some kind of desert. However, HOW we choose to walk in this desert makes all the difference! We can choose to walk through it without water or food, naked, unarmed, and without ever taking shelter. Or, we can choose to walk sustained by God’s living water, fed by His bread of Life, clothed with His truth and sheltered by His mighty wings. His is more powerful than our misery.

God offers the comforts of His peace for our desert journey. The Bible says, “The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.” (Proverbs‬ ‭19:23‬) http://bible.com/1/pro.19.23.kjv Clearly, this verse doesn’t mean that we won’t experience the tragedy of evil–we all do! However, to be “visited with evil” implies that we allow it inside us. Allowing evil within the walls of our heart means we are giving it an inroad to destroy us. We may be allowing it to breach our heart by the shows we watch, music we choose, friends we hang around, or even the thoughts we choose to have linger in our mind. However, when our love and respect for God outweighs our desire for the evil of sin, then sin doesn’t have a stronghold in our heart where it can destroy us. I like the way the Amplified version of this same verse reads: “The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.”

When we love God with our whole heart, soul and mind then, even when we have trouble, our heart is “untouched.” God’s presence gives us peace in the desert of trouble. We don’t always get to choose our trouble, but we CAN choose how much it will trouble us. When we get rid of evil; eat His Bread; drink His water; clothe ourselves with His truth and righteousness–we will have His peace in any trouble!
