What lights up our day and fills us with the kind of joy that makes us walk like we’re floating on air? Is it attention from one we love? A pay raise? Getting our dream job? Obtaining a personal fitness goal? Winning a game? God created us to live joyfully, but often we wrongly believe we’ll obtain permanent joy from temporary sources. God is our ONLY source of pure and permanent joy. Are we experiencing HIS joy? If so, do we only choose to experience it sporadically? Of his personal experience of God’s joy, the Psalmist said: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalms 16:11) “Fullness of joy” means we are full of joy. This happens only in God’s presence.

God doesn’t change; thus, His joy isn’t temporary. Even our experiences of joy from earthly pleasures are multiplied when we are close to God. However, to have the joy of God, we must know Him in such a way that He becomes our chief desire. We desire His presence when we awake in the morning, when we plan our day, as we work and play and when we lay our head down at night. God’s presence allows us to relish the present joy of each moment instead of being constantly trapped longing for the things that only give us temporary joy.

When we seek Him every day, we fall in love with Him. It’s a lifelong process. When we feed our love for Him on His Word–our love for Him grows. Then we begin to experience our heart “leaping for joy” when we come into His presence. The Psalmist wrote: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” (‭Psalm‬ ‭28:7‬) When God is the one filling our heart with joy, our heart is always full.
