Surrender isn’t sacrifice when what you surrender to is better than what you give up. For years, I believed that surrender to God was a heavy cross. The world has a way of making wickedness very alluring and making God repugnant. Until we learn that God is the best part of who we are and that His ways fill our life with abundance, we will never surrender to Him. We don’t recognize the benefit of living in a garden instead of a desert unless we’ve seen the garden—right? By His Spirit and His Word, the Creator woos us into the wonders of His way. His Word says: “And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” (Isaiah‬ ‭58:11‬) When we experience life His way, we see the garden–then, we can’t EVER imagine life without Him.

As we become spoiled by living in the joy of His will, the temptation of the world produces a repulsive reaction within us. We remember what it’s like to be thirsty and try to quench our thirst with a cup of sand instead of a cup of fresh water. Our thirst has been completely satisfied and we don’t want to go back to the desert. The question of surrender becomes a matter of common sense. Will we surrender to the goodness of God or the barrenness of our own will?

If we must actually contemplate whether to surrender to God or surrender to our own will (we can’t do both according to Matthew 6:24), we must ask ourselves if we’ve ever truly experienced surrender to God. I mean, we don’t just walk away from the best we’ve ever had…unless we’ve never had it before OR we’re deceived into believing something better exists. God gives us the best! His glorious redemption shouldn’t be wasted living in the evil from which we were redeemed. Surrendering to God places some heaven inside of us to carry us through our journey on earth!
