Living in pride is like running a race wearing iron shackles while the the key is in our pocket! Our pride binds us and eventually destroys us; but humility gives us riches, honor and life. (Proverbs 16:18; 22:4) Why do we choose what destroys us over what gives us freedom? Pride drives us to choose the independence of our own way instead of God’s ways; to love ourselves more than we love God or others; to make life all about us; etc. God calls us to the freedom of humility.

Humility is NOT possessing a pious, self-deprecating sense of self. C.S. Lewis said: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” The closer we are to God, the more humility grows within us because the more we understand the magnitude of Almighty God’s grace, mercy, compassion and love towards us, the more we are humbly grateful. The sweet essence of this relationship we may enjoy with God is captured in the words of God as written by the prophet Isaiah: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine….you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you…everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made…I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.” (Excerpts from Isaiah 43) The King of all Creation humbled Himself to redeem us when we were but filthy rags–we are nothing without Him!

The deeper we know God, the more we see His Almightiness and how much He loves us. It transforms us. We become humbly grateful. It changes our perspective about God and others. Above all, we desire to love Him and love others. We realize what a poor substitute our prideful desire for self-recognition is when compared to joyfully living for the glory of God. We take that key God placed in our hands when He saved us and we unlock those painful shackles of pride. We run fast and free. God becomes the wind at our back, the light to guide us and the love inside us. We run for His glory!
