Sometimes when we get in a hurry about what we think is important, we miss what is REALLY important. God has His ways of slowing us down so we don’t miss blessings. For example, once in a grocery store I saw a disabled lady struggling with her motorized cart and although I was in a big hurry, I quickly stopped to help her and then rushed off. In the bread aisle, she almost backed her cart over my foot and we shared a quick laugh. A few minutes later, she nearly collided with me in the produce aisle and then she said, “This is crazy.” I realized that God was trying to get my attention and I said:, “No—this is obviously a God thing.” So I stopped my rushing and we began talking. To my delight, I discovered she had been my voice teacher in undergraduate school! We hadn’t seen each other in years. We laughed as I shared how I’d taught several people her laying-down-while-singing-breathing technique. Right there in the produce aisle, we even busted into some of her opera tunes! She was touched to tears when I told her how God had used her to blossom the musical talent He’d placed inside me. In the next 20 minutes of conversation, God reached out and wrapped His arms around the heart of a lonely lady with a connection she understood—music. Later in the parking lot, I gave her one of my albums and made sure she knew what a huge part of the miracle she was in making it. We shared a parting hug, and as she clung to me, I silently prayed for God to touch her life.

God used this incident to remind me that I often go about my daily life and forget to listen to His Spirit. When I’m tuned in, He speaks to me AND through me! God’s Word says: “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16) What a miracle and privilege to have God’s Spirit within us! If He’s in us, He’s not going to be silent. When we allow God’s Spirit to be the loudest voice we hear, then what we say is a reflection of Him. We mustn’t rush around controlled by the roar of life; but rather, listen for God’s voice so the music He placed inside us becomes a song that blesses others.
