Until we like God, we’ll never love Him. God doesn’t force us to do either; rather, He continues to shower us with His goodness to draw us to Himself. The Bible says: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” (Exodus‬ ‭34:6‬) This is NOT at all who I imagined God to be! Thus, I lived most of my Christian life disliking God and–I never loved Him! We don’t fall in love with someone we don’t like. When we like someone, we want to be around them because they make our life better. Their characteristics draw us in. Conversely, we avoid people we dislike. Their presence is an obligation instead of an anticipated event. We experience a whole range of negative reactions. Perhaps they make us feel intellectually bored, nervous, afraid, inadequate, intimidated, angry, etc. So, how do does God stack up? Do our feelings about His presence lineup more within the “like” or the “dislike” category? Do we seek Him at every opportunity during the day? When we dislike God, His presence is an obligation and we avoid Him When we like Him, we never want to be without Him.

If we don’t like God, it’s because we’re deceived about who He is. I was. Do we want to know THE REAL God–not the God we’ve created in our own mind (like I did) or the God the wicked world projects (which is usually a negative or misleading image) of Him? When we SEEK Him without any preconceived notions and without reservation, our heart is opened to the truth. We find He is infinitely better than what we ever imagined! He is found in the Bible. We also observe His handiwork in Creation. Furthermore, as we discover His goodness, we are awakened to His indescribably magnificent love and we begin to live in humble gratefulness to Him. That gratefulness produces His love within us and we experience His love by loving others as He loves us. We discover that He is marvelous and wonderful. Our words can’t adequately describe Him. When we begin to anticipate His presence, we realize we like Him so much that we’ve fallen in love with Him!
