When we have contempt for another person—we hurt ourselves. Contempt stems from pride. We believe our pride places us on a higher plane than those around us, but if we believe that–we are horribly deceived. Pride is repulsive to God. “Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:5a) He hates pride. (Proverbs 6:17) It amazes me how quickly I can become contemptuous. I allow ugly criticism to fly from my lips or judge another based upon something “I would never do.” Wow! How quickly I forget the deathly nature of my own sin against God! How may I ever presume that my own sin against God is less contemptible than that of another? Ultimately, pride destroys us: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs‬ ‭16:18) Contempt does not elevate us above the person we disdain, it dishonor us. The Bible says, “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.” (Proverbs‬ ‭29:23‬) We should resolve to banish destructive contempt from the kingdom of our heart!

Contempt is a heart-problem. How we treat others directly affects our relationship with God AND–it is a direct reflection of how close we are to God! There is no doubt that contempt separates us from God’s presence and is indicative that we are far, far away from God’s heart. The Bible says, “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.” (1 John‬ ‭4:20‬) We can’t love God while we have contempt for our fellow man. Everyone is created in the image of God and we all depend upon Him for our next heartbeat. God gives us ALL the opportunity to have a relationships with HIM! When we allow God to live through us, His compassion replaces our contempt for those enslaved by the sin from which we have been freed. When we live like we know God is the very heartbeat of our existence, His love conquers our contemptuous pride.
