Do we keep our smartphone closer than God? One day, when I left the house without my phone and I literally panicked, it struck me how ridiculously attached to it I am. Ugh! God brought this thought to mind: “Do I have the same panicky feeling when I’ve separated myself from His presence?” I admit, at times, I am more dependent on my “smart” phone—which isn’t nearly as smart as God! I allow myself to develop an addiction to a 2”X 4” inanimate object instead of my loving, giving, wise, Heavenly Father. Why?

As a society, we thirst for the stimulus of knowledge, entertainment and human companionship to guide us, comfort us and give us wisdom. The smart phone makes it easy to have it all–news, entertainment, communication with friends, affirmation, sports, calendar, work–all wrapped up into one small object. However, if we want to soak up the Spirit of God, we must take time to tune out all the human noise. He clears our ability to think, reason and exercise sound wisdom. He comforts, satisfies, and clarifies reality so we find our unique and wonderful purpose. He is wiser than anyone (or anything), but to discover Him, we must spend time with Him.

If we desire God’s presence, we will seek Him more passionately than anything else. He offers us His unfathomable wisdom. His Word says: “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding…then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.” (Proverbs 2:1-6, 9-10) All the wisdom and comfort we desire is as close to us as we are to God. We must quit drowning out His voice in the roar of the world. When we seek Him, our soul finds the treasure of His wisdom, love and peace!
