I love it when God frees me from the ego monster that is constantly jumping into the driver’s seat of my mind. It drives me to demand credit for the good that I do and to be noticed and applauded for my accomplishments. However, when I’m close to God, He reveals the dry desert road of my pride and perceived self-sufficiency. The fact is–my ego doesn’t serve me well. It hurts me because it blinds me to the truth–that I’m nothing–without God. Without Him, I have nothing worth giving to myself or to anyone else! He IS the reason I exist at this very moment. He is the pulse of my next million heartbeats, He causes the sun to rise and sustains gravity that anchors me to the earth! Close to Him, I grasp the truth that I have nothing to boast of without Him.

God’s Word is unequivocal about who owns everything, and thus who should receive all glory: “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.” (Psalms‬ ‭24:1‬) “For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.” (‭Psalms‬ ‭50:10-12‬)

When we learn that ALL WE ARE–we owe to God–we learn to be humble.

It is the HUMBLE who inherit all the wonders of the earth. (Matthew 5:5) Anything marvelous we accomplish is simply part of a circle of life where God is the center. Our family, teachers, colleagues, friends, pastors, counselors, coaches—were gifted by God and poured skill and knowledge into us enabling us to live, grow and become who we are today. Our boast, if any, is in what we’ve received; and our most blessed accomplishments are in what we give. We are mere stewards of the wonders God has given us. When we learn that God’s glory is the reason for our existence, we realize that our ego is the enemy of our joy. When God is the one we are proud of, our heart’s desire is to “boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭1:31‬b)
