Have we learned to experience the love which God intends for us to live? I lived most of my Christian life like the religious leaders in the time of Christ who were so wrapped up in their religious, legalistic rules that they failed to discover the great love relationship offered by God. They asked Jesus: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” (Matthew‬ ‭22:36) They were challenging Jesus to give them an intellectual response to their rules–instead of searching for a relationship with a loving God. (vs. 35) Jesus’ astonishing response was: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (vs. 37)‬ Amazing! Jesus went right to the heart of their problem–their lack of a relationship with God.

God is love.

The only reason we need the rules–like the ones the religious leaders were clinging to–is because we don’t love God. If we loved Him with all our our heart, soul and mind, we wouldn’t need rules to protect each other (and ourselves) from our bad behavior. Our love for God would be more important to us than our sin. When we love God with all that we are–it totally transforms us. Our relationship with God becomes the driving force behind all that we say and do.

Are we willing to seek His love without reservation–to fall in love with Him or are we more willing to entrust our heart to another mere human who struggles with the same uncertainty, fear and sin that we do, but refuse to surrender to our Loving Father? Are we afraid of God? If He is love—as His Word says–then we should run into His arms! There is no one more deserving of our trust than God who sacrificed His Son for us! When we seek to love Him, we are filled with the goodness of His Spirit; and our heart is surrounded by His love.
