A few years ago, a rat died in our attic and the stinky smell spread throughout the entire house. We couldn’t find the source right away, so for days, the noxious odor penetrated the air. We couldn’t spray enough air freshener to cover it up. However, if we were in the house for long time periods, we’d get accustomed to the smell. But when we came in from the fresh air, the smell was like being hit in the nose with a hammer!

It provided me with a great lesson about sin…

When we’ve lived in the sweet, refreshing presence of God, then the sharp contrast of sin has the same effect on us as that stinky rat. We begin to see sin the way God does because His presence illuminates the contrast.

Sin is offensive to God and it destroys us, other people, and everything good. It separates us from the wholesome, delightful presence of God. The Psalmist provided us with a vivid description of sin’s effect upon us: “There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.” (Psalms‬ ‭38:3-7‬)

Is this the view we hold of sin–even the sin we typically justify–like worry, white lies and fear? When we’ve experienced the freshness of God’s presence–then ALL sin stinks! But if we live in the stink of sin long enough, soon, we get used to the smell and forget what it’s like to experience the fresh air of God’s presence.

Ah, the refreshing experience of communing with God!

When we cherish Him, He listens. The Bible says, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalms 66:18) God’s presence is the most refreshing and lovely part of our life. When He is Lord of our life, He delights us and we NEVER want to be without Him!
