Many wars have been waged and millions persecuted and slaughtered in the name of religion. It certainly makes one wonder about the nature of whatever god is being forced upon the unconverted. Even those who grow up in a devoutly religious environment are often pressured by fear and forced into believing whatever flavor of religion is being taught. Religion has done a better job than the world of giving Jesus a bad name; however, when we simply examine the life of Jesus, what we see is—amazing love.
Jesus willingly left the splendors of Heaven to save us.
He didn’t willingly die and go through hell so that we would be forced into loving Him. He set the standard for love and showed us that love is always a choice. By His sacrifice, He loved us first and thus, enabled us to love Him. “We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19) His love woos—it doesn’t force. Religions often utilize fear to force submission; but God draws us in love and—there is no fear in love. His Word says, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.” (1 John 4:18a)
When we seek Him, our heart becomes more like His and we discover the amazing delights of knowing His love. God said, “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he hath understanding, and knoweth me, that I am Jehovah who exerciseth lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Jehovah.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
The more we seek to know and understand Him, the more we experience His purest delights. His love is a more irresistible influence than the power of man. When our heart is close to Him, the only force we experience is our own sweet surrender to His love.
