What kind of thoughts keep us up at night or rob us of joy during the day? Inventory them—do they come from God? We have a choice about what enters our mind. No one can force us to be tortured by thoughts which take away our peace. I’ve had many sleepless nights and allowed many a day to be ruined by negative thoughts or life’s problems taking control of my mind. Every time—it was my choice.

Our mind is priceless territory…

…which we may allow to be occupied by either God or things which are offensive to God. God is perfectly righteous and His presence does not dwell with sin. We must choose. So naturally, when we choose thoughts which offend the nature of God, we choose a lesser quality of life. Our choices either curse us or bless us. God’s timeless advice, which He gave Israel over two thousand years ago, still applies today: “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days.” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭30:19-20‬a)

When we are born again, God’s presence gives us His peace and blessings; but when we choose to allow evil thoughts to occupy the territory of our mind, we choose to fall away from Him and we lose His peace. God’s Word cautions us: “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.” (Hebrews 3:12)

Any thought not reflective of the mind of Christ, robs us of peace; and always produces a lesser quality of life. God’s wonderful promise is: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3) We are the gatekeepers of the precious territory of our mind. God gives us the highest quality of thought and when His thoughts occupy our mind, we experience His peace.
