I often wonder how hard it must be for God to love my unfaithful, stubborn heart. I suspect that if anyone else ever tried to love me like He has, it would cause them permanent scarring. God has seen and felt my every crime against His love and yet—He still desires me. He has felt the sting of rejection as I have loved the things of the world more than I have loved Him. In fact, I have even asked Him for the very things that I love more than I love Him! I can’t imagine the pain it must cause Him. It would be akin to my own child asking me for enough money so they can get away from me or a wife asking her husband for money to spend on her lover!
In love, He patiently gives me Himself.
He continues to offer me His strong hand of help even when I act like a spoiled child and slap it aside. He doesn’t pout, throw up His holy hands and give up on me. I am His child. He paid a priceless sacrifice to secure my place in His family. He waits for me because love is my choice. He knows nothing satisfies me like He does. When my prodigal heart finally returns to Him, my Heavenly Father rejoices. When I ask for His forgiveness, He doesn’t rub my sins in my face for a while and then begrudgingly forgive me. He forgets the sin of my repentant heart “as far as the east is from the west.” (Psalms 103:12)
His love defies every force on earth, yet He never forces us to love Him. When we choose Him, the bond is unbreakable! The Bible says: “Neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39) How incredibly powerful is His love for us! When we turn to Him, we find His love is completely satisfying. When we find God, we can stop searching for anything else. His love is worth pursuing with our whole heart!
