How much do we desire to hear God speak and live in the awareness of His presence? Our desire is directly reflected in the quality and quantity of time we spend with Him. When we truly desire to have a relationship with someone, we make ourselves available—even at great sacrifice to ourselves. We would bend over backwards to be with someone powerful or famous, or—someone with whom we are googly-eyed in love—right? Do we do this with God—or do we just fit Him into our schedule when it’s convenient? Can anyone else give us what God has for us?

If we set our highest expectations upon being with anyone besides God, we will be disappointed because no human is capable of fulfilling our deep need for Him. God knows our needs better than we know them. He waits for us to come to Him so He can lavish us with the love He designed for us to enjoy.

David wrote of His relationship with God: “You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” (Psalms 139:2-6) David experienced the wonders of God’s divine intimacy.

When we intimately experience God’s love, we are constantly drawn back into His presence.

If our only knowledge of His love is reading about someone else’s relationship with Him—that’s like saying we’ve experienced love by reading a romance novel! When we have experienced His love, our time with Him is as important as breathing. Once God fills our spiritual lungs with His freshness, life without Him is polluted. In His presence is the purest and most refreshing life we’ve ever known. When we’ve been loved by Him, He becomes our deepest desire.
