Our most unwavering joy is found in the strength of God. The Bible says the joy of the Lord is our strength. (Nehemiah 8:10b) Our joy comes from whatever is consistently good in our life—right? Is there anyone except God who is always good to us? Even we—aren’t always good to ourselves!

God is constant goodness.

When our joy is grounded in Him, it is constant and thus, we are free to grow strong and confident. He is the only one who never disappoints us. When we seek our fulfillment in anything or anyone except Him, we choose to deprive ourselves of God’s satisfying and strengthening joy. His Word says, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalms 16:11)

His joy is found in His way and departing from His way makes us despondent and weak. In Romans Chapter 7, Paul the Apostle explained this self-destructive tendency which we all possess. The carnal part of us battles to captivate us and keep us in a selfish and destructive rut—separated from God who is our constant source of strength and joy. The strength to live in joyous victory comes only from God. Just as it is impossible to be both dirty and clean at the same time, we can’t be controlled by our flesh and also expect to live in the indescribably wonderful pleasures of God.

When we become His child, He plants His Spirit of strength within us.

And when we learn to listen to Him, we obtain strength great enough to overcome our flesh. The many decisions which lie before us today are choices which will give us either God’s joy or—just fleeting happiness which ultimately leaves us dissatisfied and exhausted. I’ve been in both places and I am a witness that there’s nothing that satisfies like God. The deepest and most enduring joy we ever possess is found living close to Him.
