No one will ever love us like God. So, why do we continue to love anything or anyone more than Him? Perhaps we say we love God more than anything else but we’re actually lying to ourselves. I used to say I loved God, but my heart was far from loving Him and my actions spoke louder than my words. I was a Christian who did what I wanted as long as I could get away with it. My goals were more important than God’s will. My pursuit of satisfaction  was my god. Obedience to God was something I did to keep myself out of hot water with my parents and my church. It had nothing to do with loving God.

When we truly love God, we want to obey Him because His goodness draws us close to Him. We want to be closer to what is good and there is no one as good as God. Obedience brings us closer. The first great command Jesus gave was, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.” (Mark 12:30a)

He gave us this command for our benefit. We tell our children to do things for their benefit. God wants us to love Him above all else because then—we benefit from a relationship with Him which directs us to His path of goodness. By loving Him, we place ourselves squarely in the middle of the wondrous things which He has prepared for us. “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

As I daily consider whether to please Him or to please myself, I must ask whether pleasing myself is worth the risk of losing the goodness which God has stored for me to experience today. Obedience becomes less difficult when we have experienced a relationship with God because we enjoy Him so much that we want as much of Him as possible. He is precious and valuable to us—like water in the desert.

When we love Him, His love changes us!
