God doesn’t give us everything we want, because sometimes it will take us away from what we need. We need Him. We are most fulfilled when we’re living in His presence and following His will. When we learn to let go of our own goals and desires, He becomes our desire. God is our most satisfying desire. Jesus said to the woman at the well, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (‭‭John‬ ‭4:13-14)

Jesus is the living water and when we have been satisfied by Him, nothing else will ever be good enough. Furthermore, when we are satisfied by Him, the wrong desires which burn so hotly inside of us are cooled by His presence. We’ve had the best and never want to settle for less than Him. When we’re close to Him, we stay on the winning side of our battle with our own desires. He knows our every weakness and He knows which desires will take us from Him. If money makes us independent of Him, it’s best we not have it. If a career advancement distracts us from His will, it’s a setback. Anything which comes between us and God is a step in the wrong direction. The means never justify the end when it’s outside God’s will.

God’s got a brilliant plan. Jesus said, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew‬ ‭6:25-26‬) God knows which brand of goodness will ruin us. If we’re struggling to attain something, we may need to take a step back and ensure that God hasn’t withheld it because it will take the peace of His presence from us.

There’s not a more satisfying desire than—His presence!
