How many times a day do we allow our emotions to lead us astray? Hurt, anger, disappointment, frustration, defeat, etc., can overtake us and suddenly the sunshine of our soul is covered by dark clouds and we find we’ve lost our way. But we don’t have to live lost in a nightmare of negative emotions. God created us in His image. He gave us the gift of emotion which enables us to express and feel from the deepest part of our soul. Sin—not God—is the source of the ugliness and pain we feel and express. However, when He redeemed us, He endowed us with the power to choose goodness.

His presence evokes the purest goodness He created within us. In Him, we can forgive as He does and love with His love. We can let go of darkness because He is our glorious light. His Spirit gives us His goodness. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-25) When we belong to Christ, emotional despair has been put to death. When we resurrect what is dead, we choose to be defeated by a dead enemy!

We foolishly choose to imprison ourselves but we’ve already been set free.

Today, if we find ourselves becoming imprisoned by emotions which are stealing our joy, we need to remember that we have a choice. We need to talk with God and rid ourselves of whatever is separating us from Him. He is faithful to forgive and He longs to have His children experience His goodness. In His presence, His goodness fills us. Then—His light radiates out of every expression and emotion. In Him, the deepest expressions of our soul become light and hope for ourselves and for a world shrouded in darkness.
