When God gave me the lyrics to the song, “Power in Humility,” I was in the midst of a long overdue lesson. My pride had destroyed me. I was face to face with the truth of God’s Word: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (‭Proverbs‬ ‭16:18‬) In that place of destruction, I began to return to God. He showed me that my pride had been separating me from knowing Him and hearing Him speak.

My pride was sneaky. It still is.

It masquerades as a friend while it blinds me from truth. It makes me believe that I know all the answers—just like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Then, I stop asking God because my pride makes me independent from Him. I don’t need His guidance for my business, family, daily provision, friendships. I’m just fine to briefly checking in with Him at church or during my daily devotional. The rest of the time—well, I’ve got this. “Life” is my job and I’m better at it without Him. Sound familiar? The truth is—unless we maintain a humble state of mind, we won’t consistently hear God. The Bible says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) Pride continually sabotages God’s plan for our unimaginable success.

What does humility look like? Knowing that we don’t know everything; therefore, we intently seek Him throughout the day. He becomes the most important voice in our head. His Word says, “He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.” (Psalms 25:9) When we walk in His presence, He reveals profound and humbling truth. Job said, “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” (Job‬ ‭42:5-6‬) Humility opens us up to spiritual truths which are beyond human intellectual knowledge. Humility gives us peace because Almighty God becomes our greatest security. In our humility, we find His strength. And this is the “Power in Humility.”
