Following God is like having a knowledgeable and trustworthy guide on an exciting outdoor adventure. When following the guide, we’ve no reason to worry about the final destination or our provisions. He knows the way and has planned sufficient food and water for each day. There’s a certain serenity about not having to worry about where you’re going and being able to enjoy both the challenges and the beauty of the adventure. When God is our guide, we experience the magnificent security of His guidance.

The Psalmist wrote, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” (‭Psalms‬ ‭23:1-5‬)

When we’re on the path God has planned—He is our greatest security! He does all the heavy lifting. Our job is very simple—listen and obey. God said, “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go. Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river and your righteousness as waves of the sea.” (Isaiah 48:17-18)

God longs to give us all of His goodness—His peace, His abundance, His friendship and all blessings!

When we draw close to Him, we experience His wisdom, strength and love. We learn to hear Him. But when we don’t know Him, we don’t recognize His voice or His ways. We spend our life wandering in circles, swimming in swamps, fighting through brambles and encountering swift rivers without bridges. We strive only to survive. Life is a miserable journey. God has a much better plan. When we draw close to Him, we hear His wisdom and begin the amazing journey He’s planned!
