What’s your definition of “living the dream?” Really think about it. How big is your dream? Are you living it? Think about how you’ve spent most of your time, effort and money. What have you attained? Is it anywhere close to your greatest dreams? I thought my dreams were big—until I got close to God. Now I know that they were insignificant compared to the gifts and adventures He had planned.

My life had primarily been about myself and my own happiness—having a family, possessions, positions, security, retirement, and accomplishments. God had so much more! The closer I get to Him, the more I see Him unfolding dreams greater than I ever imagined. He has my big, amazing plan and works out the small, gnarly details. The only time the plan gets snarled is when I’m not listening. My most critical job is to stay close to Him and listen. When I am living freely in His will, His purpose for my life is no longer constricted by my sin.

When we know God, then we can say: “I know that You can do all things, and that no thought or purpose of Yours can be restrained or thwarted.” (Job 42:2)

We won’t live in the magnificent dream He has planned unless we hear Him. The more we listen to Him, the better we hear Him. We get accustomed to the sound of His voice and begin to recognize when He speaks His will to us. We learn what grieves Him because when we sin, we feel the strength of His presence departing. However, when we have an open and listening heart, He literally guides every step of our day. We hear Him say, “this is the way, walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21a) God has the biggest dreams and greatest adventures planned for us! Each one of us has the opportunity to live close to Him and to choose His will. In His will, we begin “living the dream” He has planned!
