When God purifies our hearts, it’s like a brilliant lamp has been unveiled in the darkness. When it’s not hidden by the darkness of sin, the light of His presence is set free in our heart. His presence enlightens us. His light illuminates the truth about the danger and sadness of darkness. God allows us to see people as He does. For example, when people are hateful to us, He allows us to see they have a damaged heart in need of the same forgiveness He has given us. We learn to not retaliate with darkness, but to shine His light. His love frees us from hate so that we may love as He does.

His love in us draws those who are tired of the darkness. When others see God’s love in us, they are able to see who God is. His Word says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him…

…In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” (1 John 4:7-12)

The closer we are to Him, the clearer He is seen in us by others.

God makes us sweet. Children are drawn to His love in us. Love-starved adults, tired of the misery of darkness, are too! Many of the people I see in my office have been abused by darkness or abused themselves with sin for so long that their heart is desperate for God’s love. To give them God’s love, I must allow God’s presence to flood my life. When I do, His wisdom and compassion are funneled through me and His love touches their hearts. I can’t do that without Him. He is love. To be God’s love, we must love Him more than we love anything that separates us from Him!
