If those we love the most can hurt us the worst—imagine how God feels. There is no one who loves us like He does or who sacrificed so much for us. Yet, we constantly take His love for granted in ways that would end most human relationships. Imagine this scenario: A girl is purchased for an unthinkable price from a cruel slave master and adopted by her generous benefactor. He gives her everything. She is secure, free, loved and more joyful than she’s ever been! But what does she do? She is ashamed of her benefactor and lives as if he doesn’t exist. Even though he gives her everything she has, she rarely thanks Him. She doesn’t want to spend any personal time with Him or want to get to know Him. The only time she talks to Him with sincerity is when she wants something or gets into trouble.

It gets worse.

She often chooses to get friendly with her former cruel slave master. She flirts with him and sometimes voluntarily submits herself to his chains and whips. When the torture gets too bad she calls her benefactor for help. Also, despite the fact she knows many, many people who are chained by the slave master, she has little concern for their freedom so she doesn’t tell them about her benefactor. Instead, she hides her gift of freedom and pretends slavery is better. Wow! Right? Does that describe any of us?

When God gave me this devotional, my heart burst with tears! How much He loves me! How patiently devoted His love for me has been. He loved me when I was unlovable. “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (‭Romans‬ ‭5:8‬) He gave me freedom to love Him and love others. “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (‭Galatians‬ ‭5:13‬)

It must crush Him when I forsake Him for the slavery of sin, don’t want to spend time with Him or don’t  listen to Him. It must be doubly painful when I hurt another one of His children. God has done so much for me that He deserves my most passionate love.
