If my physician told me that I had to change my diet or I would have a heart-attack—would it take a heart attack for me to change my diet? Would I wait and see just how much fried food my body could stand? Would I flagrantly disregard my own health and risk becoming useless and a burden upon my family? Certainly not! So, why would I have less concern for my spiritual health?

Do we fill our hearts with the rubbish of the world and continuously cause coronary vascular insult to the good heart God redeemed within us? Maybe our sins aren’t the “big” ones like fornication, pornography or murder. Perhaps they’re sins like worry, doubt, pride or spiritual laziness. Irrespective of our sin choices—all of them cause spiritual plaque to build up and constrict the flow of living faith within us. God has given us the power to have a healthy heart. It’s our choice whether to take the instructions of Jesus, the Great Physician. (Mark 2:17)

Will we choose to disregard His advice?

Jesus said His Spirit was sent to teach us. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John‬ ‭14:26‬) However, we can’t be taught by Him if we don’t know Him or aren’t close enough to hear Him.

What prevents us from hearing Him? Simple—the behavior that crucified Him. The Bible makes it clear that walking in the Spirit is not synonymous with sin. “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (‭Galatians‬ ‭5:16‬) If we aren’t hearing God, then we can’t walk with Him. What part of our diet is keeping us from hearing Him? Is it worth the risk? God loves our heart more than we do. His Word is our complete manual for a healthy heart! When we follow His Word, we are given a completely new lease on life. We’re no longer living on the verge of a spiritual heart attack!
