God can stop the bleeding of our broken heart with the touch of His nail-scarred hand. A shattered heart can ruin our perspective OR—it can focus us on true reality. God is the only one who gives us true reality because He knows everything. So, in those times when we lay sleepless, or filled with painful memories and emotions, we must remember that it is God alone who miraculously heals. I know. I’ve seen Him do it in me. These Psalms tell us of God’s care for broken hearts. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalms ‭147:3) “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalms ‭34:18‬)

When we are crushed, God longs for us to reach out to Him so He can heal us.

But what do we typically do? We search for something less than God to fill the void. Maybe another person, maybe a bottle or a pill, or working harder—anything to stop the pain. We allow our pain to turn to bitterness and we become cold in order to protect our heart from more pain. We reason that if we have a cold heart we can’t hurt as badly. But we forget that a cold heart can’t feel the warmth of love either. Love is what we want. God is love.

If we want God to heal our crushed heart, we must first forgive the offender. When we forgive, God forgives us, draws close to us, and fills us with His love. He knows the depth of our pain and the frailty of our heart. The Psalmist wrote: “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.” (‭Psalms‬ ‭103:11-14‬) God is the only love who heals our heart and the only love who never hurts us!
