When you lose your best friend—the one you’ve been tied to at the soul and whom you trust and love more than any other friend—you experience one of life’s deepest sorrows. I’ve been there and it’s been so powerfully painful I thought my heart would never stop hurting. There is no easy way to “get over” someone who was so important and is now suddenly gone. A part of them is still inside of you and a part of who you are. That’s why they were so wonderful because they made you a better person—right?

So, how do you stop the pain?

How do you stop thinking about them so you can breathe again? We must heal. That hole in our heart is so huge that it requires supernatural healing. The Great Physician is nearer than we think. He is by our bedside every night listening to our sobbing. He waits for us to turn to Him. He is the cure. It doesn’t happen overnight. Just like with a broken bone—healing is a process. It begins when we place our heart into the mold of His hands. He can’t heal us any other way.

We must place every part of our heart completely into His care. We must surrender all that we are. As we do, He heals us. He replaces the damaged pieces. He transplants the strength of His heart in us. His heart has been through a hell worse than we can comprehend. He can’t give us the strength of His heart if we try to heal our heart apart from Him.

God knows us better than anyone—even that best friend who is now gone. The Psalmist said: “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalms‬ ‭139:16, 23-24‬) If we want total healing in our heart, we need to surrender to God who made our heart. When we surrender to Him, He gives us His Almighty heart!
