Is our pursuit of worldly satisfaction and security preventing us from getting what we really want? What do we believe will totally satisfy us? Is it a human relationship, success or wealth? Are we consumed with obtaining these things? Unfortunately, when we get them, they never satisfy us. In fact, they actually distract us from pursuing our permanent source of satisfaction—God. They make us more independent of Him.

If you’ve never been satisfied by God, then the concept of satisfaction in Him probably sounds very foreign. It was to me. Test yourself. Does this verse describe the satisfaction God gives you? “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalms‬ ‭16:11) There was a time in my Christian life when I would have said: “No. I don’t get pleasure or joy from being with God. I’m not sure I want to be with Him because He’s old fashioned, boring and has no idea how to make me happy.”

I’d obviously never spent any time with God and I’d allowed the world’s blind perception of God to shape my view of Him. So, even though my soul and spirit were born again, my flesh never allowed me to experience the joy of His presence. I passionately pursued what was less than God’s best. I chose my independence.

As long as I lived independent of God, I could never be satisfied by Him.

I wore myself out with the pursuit of the world until one day I found myself spiritually destitute. There, God revealed His immense goodness to me. His goodness drew me to pursue Him passionately. Now, the more I know Him, the more I want nothing less than Him. I’ve had plenty of less and it never satisfied! All that time I was pursuing satisfaction in the world—I didn’t know that He was what I really wanted and needed. Now—He is my joy. He is what I want most!
