Choosing peace comes from being confident,  knowing that we are loved and protected, that our needs are met, and our life has meaning. Can anyone provide us these things better than the Creator? Of course not! But how often do we find ourselves trusting something less than Him? When we live close to Him, we discover His exceptional ability to provide for our every need. Close to Him we discover a level of confidence that we’ve never experienced. Peace is born from confidence.

Nothing takes away God’s confidence; so, when we’re close to Him—nothing takes away our peace. Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) Jesus distinguishes His peace from the world’s peace—that is, “peace” which comes from other people and things. His peace isn’t based upon things that pass away and change—but rather upon Himself—unchanging, all-powerful, all-loving and omniscient God! That’s why, He commands us: “Don’t be troubled or afraid!” He commands us to rest our confidence in His power.

Wow! How often do I break this commandment? Every time I worry—right?! When I worry, I’m placing my confidence in something less than God because I don’t trust Him to handle it. Because worry is sin, it pushes me away from God.

Trusting Him builds my confidence in His power and gives me peace.

I can’t represent to others that God gives me peace if I don’t have it myself. For example, if I’m a nervous wreck before a trial, I have little credibility if I tell my clients not to worry. The closer we are to Him, the more evident it is that we possess His confidence and peace. Our countenance and actions reflect confidence in His abilities—not ours. His peace is one of His precious promises to us. When we live close to Him, worry and fear are replaced with His peace!
