If you were in an MMA fight and knew the opponent had a wicked-quick, guillotine choke, you’d never purposefully place yourself in a position to let him use it. Furthermore, if he’d already used it on you once, you certainly wouldn’t put yourself in the same position to let him use it again! Instead, you would train harder and get rid of bad habits.  Then, avoid placing yourself in a position to be tripped up by the same move. Right?!? So—why do we allow ourselves to be spiritually tripped up by the same moves over and over again?

If we think about what knocks us out of the fight, we need to ask ourselves: How long have we been foolishly falling for this move? Are we going to let the enemy trip us up with the same moves; or is he going to have to come up with some new moves to try to take us out? Solomon wrote: “The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.” (Proverbs 5:22-23) If we lack the discipline to avoid the same head-lock of sin, then we’re stuck on stupidity—or, as Solomon put it—living in “great folly.” Proverbs chapter five is about the ensnarement of sexual immorality; however, ANY sin can ensnare us.

What’s your snare of choice?

Anger, which destroys your testimony? Paralyzing fear? Worry, which is doubting God? Selfishness, which chains love? Or, are you making an environmental choice which makes you vulnerable to being knocked flat on your back—like your friends or pouring trash into your mind? Either way, we need to identify the sin which “so easily besets us” and then pray, train and prepare so we won’t fall for it again. (Hebrews 12:1) We were created for a Divine purpose and Christ paid the ultimate price so we could live it. Live free or live stupidly.

Which will it be?
