Would you ever choose a life of being alone every night, tortured by silence, devoid of sunshine and sights and the sounds of nature, unable to go anywhere, deprived of holidays, birthdays and human touch—along with all of the other joys of freedom? I definitely couldn’t ever see myself choosing to go to prison! But—I have–when I choose the prison of sin! When I allow my fleshly desires to control me—I become imprisoned. From inside my cell, I see only bars and walls of my unsatisfied desires. The bars prevent me from seeing God’s blessings outside the cell. All the while, the key to freedom, that is—finding my satisfaction in Christ—is hidden in my heart.

I’ve locked myself in all kinds of sin-prisons—like the prison of loneliness. There, I’ve walled-up myself in self-absorbed living instead of choosing the freedom of God’s companionship.

The truth is, that we often slip into prison without realizing it because we live in a world ruled by someone who is very sneaky. He makes bad look very good. He dangles the apple of “freedom” which, when eaten contains the poison of imprisonment. The torture of imprisonment should be a strong deterrent; especially when compared to sweet freedom! The more I live free; the more God gives me His view of reality and the stronger my aversion grows for sin’s imprisonment. It makes me want to run at the sight of any “sin which so easily besets” me! (Hebrews 12:1)
The closer we get to God, the more we experience His promise of freedom and we learn to recognize the lies which imprison us! Jesus said: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36) The freest time of my day is my morning hour with God where my soul and spirit commune with Him. He fills me with Himself. Then, when I am vigilant to stay near Him throughout the day, I live as free as He does!
