What’s the difference between “knowing about God” and “knowing God?” Well, what’s the difference between reading about love and falling in love? It’s experiencing a relationship—right? When we study Him without knowing Him, we’re simply intellectualizing His attributes. When we do this without knowing Him, we form false impressions about who He is. I certainly did!

I learned so much about how He judges sin that I was scared to death of Him! Rather than trying to get to know Him, I just tried to follow as many rules as I could so I could maybe make Him happy and escape His wrath. This was an insane view of God! He created us to have a relationship with Him! He calls us His children!!! Most parents want the best for their children. God is a much better parent than we are because He is love.

Jesus said: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew‬ ‭7:7-11‬)

To know our Heavenly Father, we must desire a relationship with Him more than anything else—especially sin. He doesn’t embrace our sin—why would He? It crucified His beloved Son. So, if we are living in doubt, worry, fear, hate, jealousy, gossiping, or otherwise living by our fleshly desires—we will never be close to Him. He longs to be close to us; he proved it and he gave everything so we could know Him. When we know Him, the goodness of His love draws us away from the slavery of sin. When we know God, we know we are loved and we receive His wisdom, love and power. Knowing Him is knowing the best!
