I was a child of God for over 20 years before I made the effort to get close enough to hear Him speak to me. I thought people who claimed to hear God were just suffering from an overactive imagination. I was wrong! You see, although I was born again, I didn’t want Him interfering with my plans. So, I never pursued a relationship with Him. When I finally awakened to the wonder of who He is—I began to pursue Him like the greatest treasure on earth! Now, I never want to go back. When I’m close to Him, I hear Him speak to me daily.

I see the miraculous works He does in my heart and in those He influences through my life.

How did this happen? Well, after I was born again—although I grew in knowledge of the Bible—I failed to develop a personal relationship with God. As a result, my faith was rule-based only—and obedience to the rules didn’t satisfy my need for a relationship with God. It didn’t bring me close to God because I’d ignored the other part of the equation—my heart.

The Book of Proverbs says: “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding…then you will…find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:1-6)

We don’t treasure God’s commands until we treasure God. We treasure God when we spend time with Him. When we do, our heart longs to hear Him, so we “call out for insight” and “raise our voice for understanding.” It’s an amazing circle which begins when we are drawn to Him by His love! His love is unparalleled in human experience. It compels us to treasure His commands and seek Him with all our heart!
