Do we believe that we may possess the gifts of God’s perfect wisdom, powerful protection and unmeasurable love? May we possess His understanding to solve the world’s toughest problems or His peace in any tumultuous situation? The key to His gifts is our obedience because it places us in His presence.

Proverbs chapter two begins: “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments.” Immediately following, God lists the benefits resulting from our obedience: “The Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints….you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path…wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil.” (Proverbs 2:6-12)

All the wonderful benefits of God begin with Him. Disobedience is sin. He can’t embrace sin because it’s contrary to His righteous nature. We are quick to recognize obvious sins, but disobedience also sneaks inside in forms we don’t recognize. For example, worry is disobedience to God’s command to “fear not.” This command is given 364 times in the Bible. If we are worried, we are doubting God’s power, wisdom and love—so how can He ever give us what we don’t believe in?

Whatever form it takes, we must confess our disobedience. When we do, we welcome God’s presence into the home of our heart. The benefits of His gifts far exceed the perceived benefits of sin. As we experience the benefits of His gifts, we are even more vigilant to get rid of sin so as not to miss any gift He has planned for us.

The magnificent gifts of God are the amazing benefits of our obedience!
